The Whysles curriculum for schools covers three levels – Toddlers, Pre-schoolers Level 1 and Pre-Schoolers Level 2.
Toddlers covers the age group 2.5 to 4 years. The learning environment is set a mixed aged classroom. Under Toddlers themes are grouped broadly to cover related topics and children get basic exposure to the concepts. Since these children are entering into a controlled environment for the first time, the first month is spend for settling them and familiarizing them with the new surroundings. For this reason, the first theme is “School bells are ringing” where children get familiar with the new environment. Besides themes, importance is given to physical and motor development, social skills and pre-language and pre-math skills. Toddlers also make use of didactic materials which are derived and evolved from the materials used under the Montessori approach for providing children with hands on experience and learning. These materials are carefully chosen and customized to be developmentally appropriate and suitable to curriculum requirements.
Pre-schoolers Level 1, comes with 30 thematic units and with accompanying flash cards, poster, and activity booklets. This is for children who fall in the age bracket of 3.5 to 5. The 30 themes under Preschoolers Level 1 are elaborate and cover a wider range of topics to give maximum concepts exposure to children. The themes are sequenced such that children start from simple themes and slowly progress to the more complex themes. Language and Math goes hand in hand with the themes. Students at Level 1 start with pre-math, pre-reading and pre-writing skills and move on the numbers and letters as well as various mathematical concepts.
Pre-schoolers Level 2, have identical 30 themes with higher level content when compared to Pre-schoolers Level 1. This level is meant for children who are of ages 4.5 to 6 Here too Language and Math goes along with the weekly themes with the children getting exposure to blends, and advanced level reading and writing.
